Wonderful Large19th Century 18 Carat Gold Horseshoe Locket

 

This large oval high carat gold locket dates to the end of the nineteenth century and comes from Europe, perhaps Austria.

 

The front motif depicts love and luck. The ivy with ruby berries means 'I cling to thee' the rose cut set horseshoe, topped with a single ruby, mounted in silver, represents Luck and Love, maybe a wedding piece in which to put photos of the Bride and Groom.

The edge of the locket has a swirling motif in a very Art Nouveau style

 

The locket slides open, ready for photographs.
